Article: Why I Chose Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros for a Freedom Traveller

Why I Chose Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros for a Freedom Traveller
Three Islands. One Unforgettable Escape.
When people think about a Greek island holiday, the same names tend to come up time and time again.
Santorini.
Mykonos.
Perhaps Crete or Rhodes.
They’re beautiful destinations, but they’re not always the right destinations.
At Savi Escapes, every itinerary starts with the traveller, not the map.
This particular journey was designed for what we call a Freedom Traveller. Someone who isn’t tied to school holidays, isn’t searching for the busiest resort on the island and doesn’t want every day planned from sunrise until sunset.
Instead, they’re looking for authenticity. Time to slow down. Beautiful places. Incredible food. Boutique hotels. Hidden beaches. Meaningful experiences.
The brief was simple:
“Show me the Greece most people never see.”
The result was a carefully paced 14-night island-hopping itinerary through Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros.
Three islands.
No crowds.
No rush.
Just the freedom to experience Greece properly.
Why Not Santorini?
This is often the first question people ask.
And the answer is simple.
For the right traveller, Santorini can be incredible.
But for this traveller, it wasn’t the right fit.
During peak season, Santorini can be crowded, expensive and surprisingly busy. Cruise ships arrive daily, popular viewpoints become congested and restaurants often need booking well in advance.
For travellers seeking iconic views and bucket-list experiences, that’s absolutely fine.
For a Freedom Traveller, however, the appeal lies elsewhere.
Instead of following the crowds, we wanted to create a journey that felt more personal.
A journey where discovering somewhere new mattered more than visiting somewhere famous.
That’s where Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros came in.
Stop One: Milos (4 Nights)
Why I Chose It
If somebody asked me which Greek island has the most spectacular coastline, Milos would be very high on the list.
The island was formed by volcanic activity, creating dramatic landscapes, hidden sea caves, white rock formations and beaches that look almost otherworldly.
It’s also considerably quieter than many of its more famous neighbours.
For travellers wanting beautiful scenery without the crowds, Milos is one of Greece’s greatest hidden gems.
What Makes Milos Special?
Milos is famous for:
- Sarakiniko Beach and its lunar-like landscape
- Kleftiko’s spectacular sea caves
- Colourful fishing villages such as Klima
- Crystal-clear swimming spots
- Excellent boat trips around the island
- Authentic tavernas and relaxed island life
One of the things I particularly love about Milos is that it rewards curiosity.
The best beaches are often the ones you discover by accident.
The best viewpoints are rarely signposted.
The island encourages exploration.
Why Four Nights?
Many travellers underestimate how much there is to see in Milos.
A two or three-night stay often feels rushed.
Four nights allows enough time to settle into island life, enjoy a boat trip, explore the coastline and still have time to simply relax.
Hotel Selection
For this itinerary, I selected Volcano Luxury Suites.
The property offered exactly what this traveller was looking for: boutique luxury, beautiful surroundings and a strong sense of place without feeling overly commercial.
Stop Two: Sifnos (5 Nights)
Why I Chose It
Every itinerary needs balance.
After four nights exploring Milos, I wanted somewhere that encouraged the traveller to slow down even further.
Sifnos was the obvious choice.
Known throughout Greece for its food, traditional villages and relaxed pace of life, Sifnos feels wonderfully authentic.
It isn’t flashy.
It doesn’t try to impress.
And that’s exactly why people fall in love with it.
What Makes Sifnos Special?
Sifnos is known for:
- Outstanding traditional Greek cuisine
- Beautiful whitewashed villages
- Excellent walking and hiking trails
- Local pottery traditions
- Relaxed beaches and sheltered bays
- A slower pace of life
Many travellers visit Greece and spend most of their time moving.
Sifnos encourages you to stay still.
To linger over lunch.
To wander without a plan.
To enjoy a destination rather than simply see it.
Why Five Nights?
This became the longest stay of the itinerary for a reason.
The traveller wasn’t looking to constantly pack and unpack.
They wanted somewhere to breathe.
Five nights allows enough time to embrace the rhythm of the island without feeling rushed.
Hotel Selection
I selected Elements Sifnos Boutique Hotel because it perfectly reflected the overall philosophy behind the journey.
Stylish without being pretentious.
Luxurious without being overwhelming.
A hotel that complements the destination rather than competes with it.
Stop Three: Folegandros (3 Nights)
Why I Chose It
Every great itinerary needs a memorable finale.
For this journey, that finale was Folegandros.
Of all the islands in the Cyclades, Folegandros is perhaps one of the most underrated.
It combines dramatic scenery, beautiful architecture and a peaceful atmosphere that’s becoming increasingly difficult to find elsewhere in Europe.
What Makes Folegandros Special?
Visitors love Folegandros for:
- One of the most beautiful Choras in Greece
- Spectacular cliffside views
- Stunning sunset locations
- Quiet beaches
- Traditional Cycladic architecture
- A wonderfully relaxed atmosphere
It feels like a place that’s remained true to itself.
The perfect destination to end a journey designed around authenticity.
Why Three Nights?
Three nights creates enough time to fully experience the island while maintaining the overall flow of the itinerary.
It’s long enough to fall in love with the destination but leaves you wanting more.
Which, in my opinion, is exactly how a great itinerary should end.
Hotel Selection
For the final stage of the journey, I chose ANEMI Folegandros.
Its location, service and understated luxury made it the perfect final chapter for this traveller’s Greek adventure.
What Most People Get Wrong About Greek Island Hopping
One of the biggest mistakes travellers make is trying to fit too much into one trip.
I regularly see itineraries attempting to cover five, six or even seven islands in two weeks.
On paper, it sounds exciting.
In reality, it often becomes exhausting.
Great island hopping isn’t about seeing as many islands as possible.
It’s about choosing islands that complement one another and allowing enough time to enjoy each one properly.
For this traveller, three carefully chosen islands created a far richer experience than six rushed ones ever could.

The Outcome
This itinerary wasn’t designed around what was popular or whats trending on social media.
And it certainly wasn’t designed around squeezing in as many destinations as possible.
It was designed around one traveller and the way they wanted to experience Greece.
That’s ultimately what tailor-made travel should be.
Not finding the right package.
Creating the right journey.
And for this Freedom Traveller, hidden Greece was exactly the right answer.
If you’d like us to create your own Freedom Traveller itinerary, we’d love to hear from you.
Because the best journeys aren’t found on a shelf. They’re designed around the traveller. ✨
