The Ultimate Girls’ Long Weekend: 4 Top City Breaks to Discover

Written by Amy Leftley - Family Travel Specialist

We’ve all been there. The group chat is flooded with endless calendar links, “I can do any weekend except that one” replies and thumbs-up emojis that lead absolutely nowhere. Months fly by, and the dream of sipping wine in a sun-drenched square remains trapped behind your phone screen.

It’s time to stop planning and start packing.

Europe is full of chic, walkable and vibrant destinations that work perfectly for a quick getaway with your favourite women. For a long weekend, I’d usually recommend choosing somewhere easy to reach from the airport, simple to explore on foot and varied enough that everyone in the group gets something they love.

Whether your squad thrives on beachside tapas, thermal spa lounging, late-night dancing or cycling along scenic canals, these four incredible cities tick every box.

1. Palma, Mallorca

Best For: Sun, Sea & Rooftop Sangria
Vibe: Effortlessly Chic Mediterranean
Squad Activity: Catamaran Sunset Cruise

If your group is craving a blend of coastal relaxation and sophisticated city energy, Palma de Mallorca is the perfect choice. Forget long airport transfers — Palma is just a short hop from the runway, meaning you can be checked into a boutique hotel and clinking glasses of chilled cava before midday.

This golden-stone city offers winding medieval streets lined with stylish boutiques, local bakeries serving warm ensaïmadas and a stunning Gothic cathedral framing the sea.

Spend your days wandering through the stylish Santa Catalina neighbourhood, browsing local markets and stopping for tapas. When the afternoon heat hits, head down to the trendy beach clubs or take a short taxi ride to a nearby turquoise cove.

Evenings here are all about rooftop terraces, fresh seafood and watching the sunset ignite the Mediterranean sky.

Trip Highlights

Stay: A boutique hotel in the historic Old Town with a rooftop pool.
Dine: Share contemporary tapas at El Camino or grab vibrant local bites at Mercat de l'Olivar.
Unwind: Spend a lazy Saturday afternoon at Anima Beach Club listening to chilled DJ sets right on the water.

2. Budapest, Hungary

Best For: Thermal Spa Days & Ruin Bar Nights
Vibe: Majestic, Gothic & Electric
Squad Activity: Soaking in Széchenyi Baths

For a squad that loves a touch of drama, rich history and unbeatable nightlife, Budapest delivers an unforgettable long weekend without breaking the bank.

Split by the majestic Danube River, Buda offers fairy-tale views and historic castles, while Pest is the beating heart of the city’s modern culture, food scene and legendary nightlife.

By day, Budapest is a wellness paradise. Pamper yourselves at one of the city’s iconic thermal bathhouses, floating beneath ornate ceilings or soaking in steaming outdoor pools.

By night, the city transforms completely. Budapest’s famous ruin bars — abandoned warehouses and courtyards turned into eclectic drinking spaces — provide the ultimate backdrop for a memorable girls’ trip.

Trip Highlights

Stay: An elegant apartment or design hotel on the Pest side close to the Jewish Quarter.
Dine: Enjoy a glamorous brunch at the New York Café, often called one of the most beautiful cafés in the world.
Explore: Rent a private boat cruise down the Danube at night to see the Parliament building illuminated in spectacular gold.

3. Seville, Spain

Best For: Tapas Crawls & Flamenco Rhythms
Vibe: Sun-kissed, Romantic & Passionate
Squad Activity: Sherry Tasting in Triana

Seville is a feast for the senses and the ultimate destination for a food-and-culture-loving friendship group.

Bathed in year-round Andalusian sunshine, this city moves at a beautifully relaxed pace. The air smells of orange blossoms, the buildings are washed in warm shades of ochre and white and the streets are alive with the sound of laughter and flamenco guitars.

A weekend in Seville is essentially one long, luxurious tapas crawl. Forget formal sit-down dinners. Instead, hop from bar to bar through the historic Santa Cruz district, sharing plates of Iberian ham, patatas bravas and local wines.

Spend your afternoons admiring the breathtaking Plaza de España or climbing the Giralda tower for panoramic city views before getting dressed up for an intimate flamenco show.

Trip Highlights

Stay: A converted traditional Andalusian palace hotel with a lush interior courtyard.
Dine: Visit El Rinconcillo, the oldest tapas bar in Seville, for incredible atmosphere and authentic dishes.
Relax: Book a late-afternoon session at the AIRE Ancient Baths for a candlelit thermal bath experience.

4. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Best For: Boutique Shopping & Canal Cruises
Vibe: Laid-back, Aesthetic & Cosmopolitan
Squad Activity: Private Boat & Wine Tour

If your ideal getaway involves picturesque streets, independent boutiques, world-class museums and cosy brunch spots, Amsterdam is an easy yes.

The Dutch capital is incredibly accessible and perfectly sized for a weekend of exploring on foot or by bicycle. Its tree-lined canals and gabled houses make almost every corner feel postcard-worthy.

Spend your morning hunting for vintage treasures and independent labels in the trendy Nine Streets district before stopping for coffee and pastries at a canal-side café.

In the evening, skip the crowded tourist boats and rent a private open-air electric boat instead. Bring your own cheese board and wine, then glide through the illuminated waterways as the city lights up around you.

Trip Highlights

Stay: A trendy canal house hotel in the Jordaan district.
Dine: Indulge in a lavish brunch at Pluk or a stylish Asian-fusion dinner at Momo.
Do: Rent pastel-coloured bicycles and cycle through Vondelpark like true locals.
