The Best Mediterranean Family Holidays for 2026 (And Where I’d Actually Take My Own Family)

When people ask me for recommendations for a family holiday in the Mediterranean, they often expect a simple answer.
Spain.
Greece.
Cyprus.
Job done.
But after helping families plan their holidays year after year, I’ve learned that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all family holiday.
What works brilliantly for one family can be completely wrong for another.
As a parent myself, I know that a successful family holiday isn’t just about finding sunshine and a pool. It’s about finding somewhere that works in real life.
Will the children be entertained?
Will everyone find something they want to eat?
Is the hotel actually family-friendly, or does it simply claim to be?
And perhaps most importantly, will everyone come home with stories to tell?
The Destination I Book Most For Families
If I had to choose one destination that consistently works well for families, it would be Cyprus.
In fact, it’s the Mediterranean destination I probably book most often.
Many families overlook Cyprus in favour of Spain or Greece, but I think that’s a mistake.
The weather is excellent, English is widely spoken, prices once you’re there are generally very reasonable, and there is far more for children to do than many people realise.
Waterparks, boat trips, family-friendly beaches and plenty of entertainment mean children rarely get bored.
For British families, it also feels reassuringly familiar whilst still feeling like a proper holiday abroad.
Why Greece Continues To Impress Me
If your family loves all-inclusive holidays, I think Greece is one of the strongest options available right now.
The quality of family resorts continues to improve and many hotels have invested heavily in waterparks, splash zones and family facilities.
For families wanting a resort where children can spend all day playing while parents actually get a chance to relax, Greece is often where I start my search.
It also offers a fantastic balance of value and quality.
I often find families can get more for their money than they expect.
My Slightly Unpopular Opinion About Spain
Spain will always be a fantastic family destination.
But if I’m being honest, I don’t think it’s the automatic choice it once was.
As destinations like Greece, Turkey and Egypt continue to improve their family offering, Spain faces much stronger competition than it did ten years ago.
Many Spanish resorts still excel for families, particularly if you prefer self-catering or half-board holidays, but families looking for huge all-inclusive resorts packed with facilities often find better value elsewhere.
The Family Destination Nobody Talks About Enough
For me, that’s Croatia.
The Dalmatian Coast is stunning.
Crystal-clear water, hidden coves, beautiful islands and charming coastal towns create the kind of holiday memories that stay with you long after you’ve returned home.
It’s not necessarily the obvious choice for families, which is exactly why I think it deserves more attention.
If your children enjoy exploring, swimming, snorkelling and discovering somewhere a little different, Croatia can be incredible.
The Biggest Mistakes Families Make
One of the biggest mistakes I see isn’t actually choosing the wrong destination.
It’s focusing entirely on price.
Families often choose the cheapest option without thinking about how the holiday will work in practice.
Three things I always encourage families to consider are:
• Transfer times from the airport
• The location of the hotel
• What there is to do beyond the pool
A hotel can look fantastic online, but if it’s two hours from the airport, miles from anywhere interesting and offers little entertainment, it can quickly become challenging.
Something I’m Seeing More Of In 2026
One trend I absolutely love is families choosing Italy.
Not for theme parks.
Not for giant waterparks.
But for experiences.
Lake swimming, train journeys through beautiful scenery, family-run restaurants and far too much gelato.
More families are looking for experiences they can enjoy together rather than simply finding the biggest resort available.
And honestly, I think that’s wonderful.
If I Had £3,000 To Spend…
I’d probably choose Egypt.
The value for money is exceptional.
Families can often enjoy fantastic all-inclusive resorts, beautiful weather and excellent facilities for significantly less than many European destinations.
If Money Was No Object
I’d take my family on a Mediterranean cruise around the Greek Islands.
You get the excitement of waking up somewhere different each day, beautiful scenery, plenty for children to do onboard and the chance to experience multiple destinations in one trip.
It’s hard to beat.
My Biggest Piece Of Advice
Don’t plan your holiday around the idea that the children will behave perfectly every day. Leave space and flexibility. Leave room for spontaneous ice creams, lazy mornings and changing plans.
The best family holidays aren’t the ones where everything goes perfectly. They’re the ones where everyone relaxes enough to enjoy themselves. Because every family is different, and that’s exactly why every holiday should be too. The best family holidays aren’t built around a destination. They’re built around the family taking them.
