Every year, without fail, my inbox starts filling up as the weather gets colder.

People know they want some winter sunshine. They know they don’t want to spend Christmas, New Year or the middle of February wrapped up in coats and scarves. The problem is that many people leave it too late.

One of the biggest misconceptions about winter sun is that it’s simply about finding somewhere warm. In reality, there are huge differences between winter sun destinations, and choosing the right one can make the difference between an incredible trip and a disappointing one.

The earlier you start planning, the more choice you’ll have, the better value you’re likely to find and the easier it becomes to secure the destinations and hotels that genuinely suit what you’re looking for.

Why Winter Sun Needs More Planning Than Summer Travel

Summer gives you plenty of options.

Winter doesn’t.

There are only so many places that offer reliable sunshine, warm temperatures and good flight connections during the colder months. Once you start factoring in school holidays, Christmas, New Year and peak travel periods, availability can disappear surprisingly quickly.

People often assume they can leave winter sun until the last minute and find a bargain. Sometimes that happens, but more often than not, the destinations with the best weather, the best hotels and the most convenient flights are the first to fill.

Winter sun is one area of travel where planning ahead can genuinely make a significant difference.

The Questions I Ask Before Recommending Winter Sun

One of the reasons I never recommend destinations based solely on temperature is because everybody’s idea of winter sun is different.

Some people are looking for 22°C and a chance to sit outside with a drink.

Others want guaranteed heat, swimming weather and beaches that feel like summer.

When I’m helping clients choose a destination, I usually start by asking:

• What temperature are you hoping for?
• How important are long daylight hours?
• Do you want to relax or explore?
• Are you happy to travel long haul?
• Is this a beach holiday or an experience-led trip?
• What destinations have you enjoyed previously?

The answers tell me far more than simply asking where somebody wants to go.

The best winter sun destination isn’t necessarily the hottest one. It’s the one that fits what you’re actually looking for.

Winter Sun Destinations I’d Always Consider Booking Early

Maldives

If you’re considering the Maldives, book early.

This is probably the destination where early booking makes the biggest difference.

Not only do the best resorts and room categories disappear first, but booking early often gives you access to better value and far more choice.

The Maldives is also affected by seasonal demand patterns that many travellers don’t consider, including peak periods around Christmas, New Year and Russian Christmas celebrations.

If the Maldives is on your bucket list, don’t leave it until the last minute.

Thailand

Thailand is another destination that benefits from planning.

It’s not simply about securing a hotel. It’s about building a route that actually makes sense.

Many of the best Thailand itineraries include multiple locations, domestic flights, transfers and different experiences. The earlier you start planning, the easier it is to create a journey that flows naturally rather than feeling rushed.

Mauritius, Seychelles and Fiji

These destinations don’t always have the volume of accommodation people expect.

Certain hotels, room categories and villa types can disappear surprisingly quickly.

If you’re travelling during peak periods, booking early can make a huge difference to both availability and overall value.

Caribbean

The Caribbean remains one of the most popular winter sun regions in the world for good reason.

Beautiful beaches, warm temperatures and direct flight options make it incredibly appealing.

The challenge is that everyone else knows this too.

Flights and the most sought-after resorts can become limited much earlier than many travellers expect.

Not All Winter Sun Is Created Equal

This is something I think people often underestimate.

Winter sun doesn’t mean the same thing everywhere.

Orlando is one of my personal favourite destinations in the world, but it’s a completely different experience to the Maldives.

Dubai offers fantastic winter sunshine and plenty to do, but the atmosphere is very different from Thailand.

Egypt can provide fantastic temperatures during the day, but evenings can become surprisingly cool.

The Caribbean, Maldives and parts of Thailand are much more likely to deliver that classic tropical beach experience many people are looking for.

It’s important to understand what you’re actually chasing before choosing a destination.

Are you looking for guaranteed beach weather?

Do you want adventure and exploration?

Do you want luxury and relaxation?

Or do you simply want to escape the British winter?

The answer helps narrow down the right destination very quickly.

Common Winter Sun Mistakes

There are a few mistakes I see repeatedly.

Leaving It Too Late

Many people only start looking when they’re already fed up with the weather. Unfortunately, by then availability may already be limited.

Expecting European Prices For Long-Haul Travel

This is a big one. Long-haul winter sun comes with long-haul flight costs. People are often surprised by how much flights contribute to the overall holiday cost.

Assuming Sunshine Means Swimming Weather

This catches people out every year. A destination can be sunny and pleasant whilst still feeling cool in the evenings. Places like Egypt, Orlando and parts of the Middle East can have beautiful winter weather, but they don’t always feel like the middle of summer.

Not Understanding Seasonal Weather Patterns

Rainy seasons, weather transitions and regional climate differences all matter. A destination may be warm on average whilst still experiencing periods of unsettled weather. Understanding those patterns helps set realistic expectations.

My Personal Winter Sun Favourites

Anyone who knows me won’t be surprised that Orlando sits high on my list. I absolutely adore it. The atmosphere, the variety, the sunshine and the endless things to do make it a destination I return to again and again.

Alongside Orlando, I consistently find myself recommending:

• Maldives
• Thailand
• Caribbean destinations
• Egypt
• Cape Verde
• Dubai and the wider Middle East

Each offers something completely different, which is exactly why understanding the traveller is so important before making a recommendation.

Final Thoughts

Winter sun is one of the most competitive travel markets of the year.

There are only so many destinations that can genuinely deliver warm weather when Europe is cold, and demand for those destinations can be incredibly high.

The earlier you start planning, the more options you’ll have and the easier it becomes to find the right destination, hotel and flight combination.

Most importantly, remember that the best winter sun destination isn’t necessarily the hottest destination or the most popular destination.

It’s the destination that matches exactly what you’re looking for.
